Job Summary: The Process Safety Engineer will drive performance improvement at site.
This position will support and facilitate site involvement in and compliance with the OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) Standard and EPA Risk Management Plan (RMP) rule.
The Process Safety Engineer will maintain process safety information, perform engineering calculations, oversee accountability in the change management process, and collaborate with other site members to improve the process safety program.
Responsibilities Role Specific Responsibilities: Serves as the primary site process safety resource for consultation with site personnel and business team members Conducts and develops process safety training for the site as needed Conducts process safety reviews, assists in internal/external audits and creates/maintains appropriate documentation Improves site procedures to align with the OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) standard and EPA Risk Management Plan (RMP) guidelines as needed, as well as corporate policies and procedures Maintain and update the site’s RMP plan as required Conducts Pre-Start up Safety Reviews (PSSR) Acts as the Management of Change (MOC) coordinator, provides oversight, conducts periodic audits for MOC Facilitates Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) and Layer of Protectional Analysis (LOPA) studies.
Ensures PHAs are conducted following corporate policy and industry best-practice.
Tracks and schedules completion of regulatory required PHA’s.
Develops and tracks key Process Safety performance metrics & KPIs at the site level Monitors key process safety metrics to develop and implement improvement programs and actively track site action items Participates/Leads incident and accident investigations to identify root causes, recommends corrective and preventative actions Identifies, communicates, escalates, and addresses process safety gaps and risks at the site Interacts with State and/or Federal regulators during site inspections Prepares reports summarizing safety testing data and recommendations Maintains and develops process safety information for the site as required Leads/Participates in site projects to improve process safety performance or to address process safety-related action items Ensures contractors are complying with their approved safety plans Completes other project work as necessary to support safe operations Compliance: Complies with company Health, Safety and Environmental policies, procedures, and arrangements Reports all Health, Safety and Environmental accidents, incidents, and near misses promptly Acts in a safe and responsible manner at all times Problem Solving and Innovation: Active participation within continuous improvement activities Participates in problem solving Takes responsibility and ownership for own learning and development in the spirit of continuous improvement of both self and the business Assists in the training, mentoring and assessment of other team members Exercises autonomy and judgement subject to overall direction or guidance Qualifications/Desired Skills Education and Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related technical field Experience: 3-5 years of experience in a Process Safety role or as an Engineer in a facility covered by OSHA’s Process Safety Management (PSM) standard and/or EPA’s Risk Management Plan (RMP) rule Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrated knowledge in recognized and generally accepted good engineering design and operational practices specifically for the chemical industry including understanding of the Responsible Care® Process Safety Code, OSHA PSM Regulations, and/or EPA Risk Management Plan (RMP) Capability to collaborate with Engineering and Technology functions to guide process safety in design and scale-up of new operations Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to adapt quickly to changing business needs and priorities Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to flex own style as needed to influence and drive results.
Ability to deliver relevant information in a clear, concise and accurate way.
