Job Description
Campus Safety dispatchers are responsible for the operation of department’s Dispatch Center 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Dispatchers begin with a required training period, with some day and overnight shifts.
Upon successful completion of the training period, the dispatcher will begin their regularly assigned shift.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Communicate with Campus Safety and Operations Management personnel, by phone and two-way radio, to resolve calls for service and emergency situations.
Receive and dispatch emergency calls.
Communicate with 911 personnel to request emergency assistance for police, fire and medical response to campus.
Perform duties that include the use of 3-5 computer screens at each workstation.
Operate computer-based security systems, including video security system, access control/alarm system, emergency broadcast systems, fire alarm monitor and dispatch call database.
Use capabilities of these systems to monitor activity, respond to and manage emergency situations, and collect information to support routine and emergency information needs.
Issue parking permits and update parking permit database.
Interact with a calm and professional manner with members of the campus community, including students, faculty, staff and campus visitors
Employ active listening skills
Function effectively and professionally in a potentially stressful environment.
Prioritize multiple requests, both emergency and non-emergency, while maintaining standards of performance for the department.
Monitor multiple radio frequencies for Hope College and area municipal agencies
Use extensive and excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to effectively communicate and solve problems
Remain alert for long periods with the possibility of no relief for several hours if needed
12 hours shifts; shifts will rotate weekdays and weekends (3 day weekend every other week); work on holidays required
Qualifications
Prior dispatching experience preferred
Must hold a valid driver’s license for a minimum of two years with a driving record acceptable to our insurance carrier
Ability to speak clearly and be understood via radio and phone communications
Strong customer service skills
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential
Strong computer skills, including solid experience with Microsoft and Google products
Comfortable with technical equipment, including radios, scanners, electronic access control, fire panels, and PC based programs.
Physical Demands
This position requires remaining in a sitting or standing position for frequent periods of time; uses office machinery such as a computers, printers, copy machines; Occasionally involves moving items over 10 pounds; frequently will move between different offices/workspaces/buildings; and requires effective communication abilities.
