This is a dual position, combining both Court Services Officer and Probation Specialist responsibilities working up to 19.
5 hours per week, Saturday and Sunday, out of the Holland District Court located in Holland MI.
Court Services Officer (Temp): $22.
69/per hour Under the general supervision of the Deputy Director of Probation and Community Corrections, provides case management services for adult offenders ordered to community services and/or other community-based correctional programs.
Performs client intake, matches clients with appropriate community service or jail-alternative worksites, and monitors client participation in and performance of community service work assignments.
Probation Specialist (Temp): $ 21.
19/per hour Under the general supervision of the Deputy Director of Probation and Community Corrections, monitors probationers and the conditions of probation.

Receives and responds to worksite complaints and questions concerning clients.
May reassign clients to more compatible worksites, issue probation violations or terminate clients from the community service program, as appropriate to nature of client noncompliance with terms and conditions of their probation orders and/or community service work site requirements.
Assigns offenders in the Jail Alternative Work Service (JAWS) program to work sites and sends weekly assignment notices and maps to locate work sites.
Serves as supervisor for a JAWS crew, supervising 10 - 20 offenders on an eight-hour Saturday shift, monitoring offenders to ensure that they behave appropriately, perform the work in good faith, commit no crimes, and comply with the conditions of their orders with respect to alcohol and drug use, etc.
Administers drug and alcohol screening examinations to clients.
May contact local law enforcement jurisdictions to take custody of clients at JAWS work sites as appropriate to client probation, parole and/or law violations at the site.
Terminates offenders from the JAWS program, requesting warrants for probation or parole violations.
Prepares weekly, bi-weekly and monthly client progress reports for probation officers and the court.
Appears at probation violation hearings for clients and presents dispositional recommendations to the court.
May provide work direction for part-time court services officers.
Receives and responds to inquiries and requests for assistance from clients and members of the general public received by phone and in-person at the Court Services office.
Performs other functions as required.
Administers preliminary breathalyzer tests (PBT's) and performs drug testing on probationers and misdemeanant and felony defendants randomly at all hours of the day and days of the week.
May have to package and submit urine specimens for GCMS/ETG confirmation testing.
In collaboration with the Sobriety Treatment Program Team (STP) and Intensive Supervision Officers (ISP), supervises persons placed in STP and ISP and monitors compliance with terms of probation and program requirements.
These terms may include curfews, drug/alcohol testing, counseling, and other requirements.
Conducts random checks during various times of the day and night on STP and ISP participants at home or other locations to verify compliance with conditions of probation and programs.
Conducts warrantless searches on probationers, vehicles, and residences for any form of illegal substances, alcohol, weapons, or other forms of contraband prohibited as part of the probation order.
Enters and manages information in the Drug Court Case Management Information System (DCCMIS) and/or justice computer system.
Prepares and fills out a daily activity report, maintains detailed records and monthly stats.
Works with various law enforcement departments involving sharing information, assisting in investigations or problems with individuals on probation, sharing resources, and designing future intervention strategies and initiatives.
Initiates and follows through with probation violations; includes determining if court order has been violated, securing documentation, verbally presenting the charges in court, and making dispositional recommendations to the judge.
Appear in court as a witness for probation violations and other hearings.
Conducts interviews and background checks for bond screens and prepares a report to make recommendations for bond on domestic violence and felony cases, weekdays and weekends.
Comprehends Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) and Judicial Data Warehouse (JDW) information.

Serves as supervisor for a JAWS crew, supervising 10 - 20 offenders on an eight-hour Saturday shift, monitoring offenders to ensure that they behave appropriately, perform the work in good faith, commit no crimes, and comply with the conditions of their orders with respect to alcohol and drug use, etc.
Administers drug and alcohol screening examinations to clients.
May contact local law enforcement jurisdictions to take custody of clients at JAWS work sites as appropriate to client probation, parole and/or law violations at the site.
Terminates offenders from the JAWS program, requesting warrants for probation or parole violations.
Prepares weekly, bi-weekly and monthly client progress reports for probation officers and the court.
Appears at probation violation hearings for clients and presents dispositional recommendations to the court.
May provide work direction for part-time court services officers.
Receives and responds to inquiries and requests for assistance from clients and members of the general public received by phone and in-person at the Court Services office.
Performs other functions as required.
Administers preliminary breathalyzer tests (PBT's) and performs drug testing on probationers and misdemeanant and felony defendants randomly at all hours of the day and days of the week.
May have to package and submit urine specimens for GCMS/ETG confirmation testing.
In collaboration with the Sobriety Treatment Program Team (STP) and Intensive Supervision Officers (ISP), supervises persons placed in STP and ISP and monitors compliance with terms of probation and program requirements.
These terms may include curfews, drug/alcohol testing, counseling, and other requirements.
Conducts random checks during various times of the day and night on STP and ISP participants at home or other locations to verify compliance with conditions of probation and programs.
Conducts warrantless searches on probationers, vehicles, and residences for any form of illegal substances, alcohol, weapons, or other forms of contraband prohibited as part of the probation order.
Enters and manages information in the Drug Court Case Management Information System (DCCMIS) and/or justice computer system.
Prepares and fills out a daily activity report, maintains detailed records and monthly stats.
Works with various law enforcement departments involving sharing information, assisting in investigations or problems with individuals on probation, sharing resources, and designing future intervention strategies and initiatives.
Initiates and follows through with probation violations; includes determining if court order has been violated, securing documentation, verbally presenting the charges in court, and making dispositional recommendations to the judge.
Appear in court as a witness for probation violations and other hearings.
Conducts interviews and background checks for bond screens and prepares a report to make recommendations for bond on domestic violence and felony cases, weekdays and weekends.
Comprehends Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) and Judicial Data Warehouse (JDW) information.
Processes offenders as a condition of bond or term of probation on electronic monitoring, enrolls offenders on SCRAM that are released from jail as a condition of bond or probation violation.
Installs electronic monitoring device on offenders, Other duties as assigned.
Required Education, Training and Experience Minimum of an Associate's degree in human services, criminal justice, psychology, sociology or a related field combined with six (6) months experience in community supervision and/or intervention services for adult offenders, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Licenses and Certifications: Valid State of Michigan Driver's License Must obtain CPR and First Aid certifications within 6 months of the date of hire.
Must obtain PBT Class I Operator certification with 3 months of the date of hire.
Additional Requirements and Information Required Knowledge and Skills: Working knowledge of the principles and practices of sociology and criminology.
Working knowledge of the criminal justice system.
Working knowledge of the Michigan Court Rules, and Michigan Criminal Code.
Good working knowledge of principles and practices of probation and case management, including graduated sanctions and treatment strategies.
Thorough working knowledge of drug and alcohol testing protocols.
Working knowledge of landscape and grounds maintenance.
Operating knowledge of the proper use of manual and power tools commonly used in landscape and grounds maintenance.
Knowledge of OSHA/MIOSHA occupational health and safety rules, regulations and requirements.
Thorough working knowledge of safety protocols and practices.
Computer literacy and familiarity with word-processing, spreadsheet, database management and other applications software.
Good interpersonal and human relations skills.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to interact positively and objectively with offenders, prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, law enforcement officers, officers of the court, community service work site agencies, and members of the general public from a wide range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and with varying levels of interpersonal communications skills.
Notes: Employees in this classification must be able to pass a stringent background investigation.
Oral and written fluency in Spanish, Cambodian, Lao or other language commonly spoken by one or more demographic groups represented in the population strongly preferred.
Physical Requirements: Must possess sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to visually monitor clients throughout the work day at JAWS work sites.
Must possess sufficient auditory acuity, with or without audio-logical appliances, to monitor clients in all activities.
Must have sufficient auditory ability, with or without audiological devices, to hear alarms, other warning signals and vehicle signals indicating backward or forward motion.
Must have sufficient manual strength and dexterity to demonstrate the proper use of small hand and power tools.
Must have sufficient strength and mobility in wrists, elbows and shoulders to demonstrate the proper use of power tools commonly used in grounds maintenance.
Must be able to tolerate exposure to extreme temperatures; dirt, dust, pollen and other airborne particulates; and inclement weather conditions.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in both a normal office environment and at outdoor JAWS work sites.
Supervision of clients at work sites may entail exposure to environmental, health and safety hazards and to personal jeopardy from aggressive clients and/or family members.
May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens while attempting to subdue or restrain a client and to other bodily fluids when administering drug and alcohol tests.
May be exposed to moving mechanical and other hazards from landscape and grounds machinery and equipment operation.
